Auto Accident Q & A
by Peter Manz, DC
What causes whiplash in an auto accident?
Whiplash is a painful injury to your neck that may occur when you’re in a car accident. One of the most prevalent forms of neck pain, whiplash often happens when you’ve been rear-ended while driving or riding in a car. Suddenly being hit from behind without warning causes your head to jerk backward and forward, often with great force.
This sudden jerking motion puts your neck through extreme stress, straining the soft tissues in the neck and causing serious pain. If left untreated, you may suffer from chronic neck and shoulder pain, or headaches.
What are the symptoms of whiplash?
The symptoms of whiplash usually appear within 24 hours of injury from the auto accident and include headaches and a stiff neck. Other signs of whiplash are:
- Blurred vision
- Tingling in your arms
- Trouble sleeping
- Decreased neck mobility
- Lower back pain
- Shoulder pain
Depending on the severity of your injury, it may take a few months to fully recover from an auto accident.
How is back or neck pain from an auto injury treated?
As with any injury or condition, Dr. Manz first evaluates the extent of damage caused by an auto accident. He customizes a treatment plan that works specifically to relieve the pain from your injuries, both immediately and long-term. Chiropractic adjustments help alleviate general back and neck pain, or to put any shifted spinal discs back into their proper position.
Because Dr. Manz’s philosophy is to treat the whole person in the most natural, noninvasive way possible, he may also recommend massage therapy to relieve any tension or strain you feel in your muscles since the accident. Massage therapy and spinal adjustments work together to relax the muscles and heal the strains. Dr. Manz may also recommend gentle exercises to help keep your joints from losing mobility and becoming stiff.
